Two-Tank Scuba Diving in St. Thomas for Certified Divers
St. Thomas snorkeling is famous, but the diving just offshore is the quieter reward. This two-tank scuba diving trip on St. Thomas takes certified divers to two different sites — reef and wreck — in one half-day boat trip with a pro dive guide. Here's what's included, what you'll see down there, and what to know first. (Not certified yet? Start with the easy reefs on our St. Thomas snorkel tours.)

Why Dive St. Thomas
St. Thomas sits at the edge of a shallow bank dotted with patch reefs, ledges and a few wrecks, mostly in the 30–60 foot range. That makes it forgiving diving — warm water (around 79–84°F), good visibility and little current at most sites — with enough structure to keep it interesting.
Going two-tank by boat is the smart way to do it: you reach sites you can't shore-dive, get a proper surface interval between dives, and let a local guide pick the best conditions on the day rather than committing to one spot.
What You'll See Underwater
The exact pair of sites depends on weather and the day's group, but a typical two-tank trip mixes a reef and a wreck or ledge. Expect:
- Green and hawksbill turtles cruising the reef
- Southern stingrays and the occasional eagle ray
- Reef fish in numbers — snapper, grunts, parrotfish, sergeant majors
- Sea fans, brain coral and sponge-covered ledges
- A wreck or swim-through on one of the two dives
Visibility usually runs 50–80 feet. It's relaxed, photogenic diving rather than deep technical stuff, which is exactly why it suits vacationing divers.
What's Included (and What's Not)
Included
The trip is set up so you just show up with your certification:
- Two boat dives at two different sites
- Tanks, weights and weight belt
- Professional dive guide in the water
- Surface interval with water on board
Not included
You'll usually need to rent or bring personal gear (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, computer, mask and fins) if you don't travel with your own — confirm rental when booking. Hotel transfers and gratuities aren't included. You must bring proof of certification and, for some operators, a recent logged dive.
Important Things to Know Before You Book
This trip is for certified divers only — you'll need to show an Open Water card (or higher). If you haven't dived in a while, say so; the guide can keep you shallow and close. Standard no-fly-after-diving rules apply, so don't schedule it for the morning of your flight home.
Dives are weather-dependent and the captain chooses sites for the calmest conditions, so the exact reefs can change. Free cancellation up to 24 hours out keeps it low-risk. If you're not certified but want to try, look at a resort 'discover scuba' option instead — this particular trip assumes you can dive independently with a buddy.
Where It Happens
Who This Trip Is (and Isn't) For
Ideal for certified vacation divers who want two relaxed, fishy dives without a big commitment. It's not the right pick for:
- Non-certified travelers (try a discover-scuba or snorkel trip instead)
- Anyone flying home the same day
- Divers after deep, technical or strong-current sites
St. Thomas Two-Tank Dive FAQ
Do I need to be certified?
Yes — this is a certified-divers trip. You'll need an Open Water card or higher and should bring proof. If you're not certified, a resort 'discover scuba' course or one of our snorkel tours is the way to get in the water.
Is gear included?
Tanks, weights and a guide are included. Personal gear (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, computer, mask, fins) is usually a rental add-on unless you bring your own — confirm when you book.
How deep are the dives?
Most sites run in the 30–60 foot range — relaxed, warm and good for vacation divers rather than deep or technical diving.
What will I see?
Turtles, rays, big schools of reef fish, healthy coral and usually a wreck or ledge on one of the two dives. Visibility is typically 50–80 feet.
Can I dive then fly home?
No — follow standard no-fly-after-diving guidance (wait at least 18–24 hours). Don't book this for the day you fly out.

Booked as a certified diver and it was hassle-free — tanks and weights ready, guide kept the group tight. Saw an eagle ray on the second dive.
Relaxed, friendly and well organized. Visibility was excellent and the captain picked calm sites. Exactly what I wanted on a trip without lugging all my gear.
